It's been quite a while since I last 'blogged'; but, despite 'the plague years', I've been steadily busy; steadily writing and recording. I always seem to have too many digital irons in the fire to juggle... to keep up with them all. But, The new website has only recently been published. It still needs tweaking, but at least, I have a online 'presence', as they say. I'll be adding to the website, since there is WAY too much that isn't on here, yet. Just checking in. God bless!

What a difference a plague makes
A shot from almost a year ago: BADD live @ Enoch's [71201] Blissfully oblivious to what was ahead! but I'm not sure that we would've or could've done anything differently about anything; even fleeing the country wouldn't have helped.
It t.i.z. what it t.i.z., but I'll be glad when it t.i.z. over!

New [Ab]Normal - New Website
As fate [and CDBaby] would have it, I've had to have a new website built; it's a long story, but one I'll post elsewhere. Since I am working with a different company, a new beast, and the site isn't finished, I needed a link to this, my old blog, to be able to keep my peeps abreast of whatsonever I am doing. I have been remiss in posting here, but this will most likely become my new 'abnormal' rant site.
Doug Duffey and BADD had an incredible reception to our sophomore CD, "Play the Blues"; which was released on Out of the Past [label] in October 2019, immediately garnered very good international reviews and went into the Roots charts 'with a bullet'. It charted and stayed high in both Contemporary Blues and the Louisiana charts [where it went to No.1 and stayed there for months]. It is being considered for a Grammy nomination... fingers crossed. svp.
All that was going on during a pandemic, hurricanes, lockdowns, socio-political upheavals, and various and sundry unforeseen horrors; so BADD was unable to tour in 2020 to promote the cd. But before and during the lockdown, Dan Sumner and I continued writing, recording, producing BADD's next [upcoming] CD, which the 4 of us are very proud of. It is completed, but with things as they are, it, like Louisiana Soul Revival's 2nd CD [recordings are finished] are 'on hold'. We continue writing and recording through it all. We're praying 2021 will be a much better year for everyone.

Voila! This is just a short update, to let you know the website is under construction, [actually there are 2, but that;s for another rant] .... but do visit again, for more 'stuff'.

Back from European mini tour [had all sold out concerts] for a few weeks before returning to Europe for an extended tour into 2019.
Great to have been back with my band of about 16+ years, "The Doug Duffey International Soul Band" in Switzerland, for 13BluesTage in Weissbad; and 2 unplugged 'duo' shows with [Swiss blues award winner] Walter Baumgartner [blues harp/vocals]...
DOUG DUFFEY + BADD will be at Enoch's on November 16th [unless there is an act of God] and it is written that LOUISIANA SOUL REVIVAL + DOUG DUFFEY will be doing Downtown River Fest on December 1 [which I hope to God does not mean outdoors]... which in itself will live up to the billing.... a bien tot
p.s. I have left Facebook for the time being- until I can get some things done- it does nothing but suck time. I also need to jettison and cull years of shit.

Doug
Duffey isn’t a morning person. He will be the first to admit this, with
a good-natured laugh. And who can blame him — he’s been a professional
musician since he was 14 years old. How many late-night gigs does that
make? Two thousand? Ten thousand?
Born and raised in Monroe, Duffey got his start in the 1960s, playing in rock bands at area recreation centers, school dances, even a skating rink. Today, he has a dozen CDs to his name and his own Wikipedia page, and he has been inducted into two music halls of fame.
Vocalist, pianist, composer — Duffey has performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Louisiana Folklife Festival. Add to that his 20 years touring Europe, playing in England, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Denmark, even twice in the American embassy in Moscow. These days, when in Europe, he often performs in Switzerland, in concert halls, five-star hotels and festivals. He was recently named an honorary member of Mahogany Hall in Bern, a legendary Swiss jazz club.
During his annual European tours, his band is called the Doug Duffey International Soul Band. Along with Duffey (piano and vocals), the troupe includes Kelvin Bullen (guitar), Sebastian Niessner (bass) and Hani Ali (drums), three international musicians who were born in Trinidad, Switzerland, and Egypt respectively.
“We’re like a delta blues band,” Duffey says, “because we’re all from a different delta. I’m from the Mississippi Delta; Hani’s from the Nile Delta; Kelvin’s from the Thames Delta; and Sebastian’s from the Limmat Delta, which is the river that runs through Zurich.”

Duffey was in his twenties when he began playing music all across the United States: Colorado, Las Vegas, Los Angles, Nashville, Little Rock, New Orleans, New York. He recorded his first single in Nashville in 1970. Later, in Los Angeles, he wrote songs for and performed with a long list of music stars — names like George Clinton, Funkadelic, Rare Earth, Keith Richards, David Byrne, Herbie Hancock. . . .
Louisiana singer Marcia Ball has twice covered Duffey’s song, “If It Ain’t One Thing.” Perhaps best known among Duffey’s many compositions are “New Orleans Rain” and “Louisiana.”
Duffey lived and worked in New Orleans for many years, and some of his songs have names like “Carnival Time in the City” and “Home Sweet Bourbon Street.” And he likes nothing better than to sing a classic like “St. James Infirmary” or to give a unique twist to “House of the Rising Sun.” No doubt it was his long New Orleans sojourn that enriched the Louisiana branch of his music — a mélange of north and south. Today, he is based in Monroe and lives in a house built by his grandfather in 1920.
As if a lifetime career as a professional musician were not enough, Duffey is also an artist and photographer, his work appearing in galleries and solo shows in the United States and in Europe. (He’s been taking photos since he was 13 when his mother loaned him her Brownie camera.) He has published two art books: “European Collages” and “Louisiana Americana.”
With decades of music-making behind him, Duffey isn’t showing any signs of slowing down; in fact, he says that he’s pushing into new territories with a growing interest in jazz and improvisation. He has a new CD in the works, upcoming gigs on the schedule and a European tour set for December. Area fans will be able to hear him in the annual Celtic Festival in Kiroli Park this October. Before that, he’ll perform a solo concert at Enoch’s Irish Pub & Café in Monroe on Sept. 20.
This northeastern Louisiana native got his start in high school in rock bands with names like “The Secrets” and “Thursday’s Children,” then moved on to playing old-time Monroe venues like the Dynasty Lounge and the Saddle & Spur, then voyaged through America from east coast to west, all the while perfecting his craft. It has been a long, circuitous journey, but today, Monroe’s Doug Duffey plays to loyal audiences both in Europe and the United States, still making music as a soul-filled, hard-driving, Louisiana bluesman.
William Caverlee has been writing features for The News-Star since 2010. He is a contributing editor of The Oxford American Magazine and the author of "Amid the Swirling Ghosts and Other Essays" (University of Louisiana at Lafayette).

MOMENTS IN A DAY REDUX
MOMENTS IN A DAY REDUX
It seems MOMENTS IN A DAY, the "album" [downloads only] which i thought was released a year ago, somehow got lost in the shuffle. Got a notice a day or so ago saying it needed to be finalized. i thought it already WAS finalized and online. DUH! ANYWAY this is a cd make up of acoustic piano improvisations done in one day [of many] in Switzerland in mid to late 2012. [could it really have been only last summer? my God it seems like decades ago] VERY mellow stuff- good for beddy byes [on low] driving, reading, meditating etc. VERY non intrusive/invasive and 'spiritual' [to me, anyway] i keep a copy in my car cd player [along with other improvisational stuff i've done and will be releasing] and have done for over a year- just 'proofing them. anyway, download and enjoy [from all cd sites:iTunes, Amazon, etc.]- and thanks in advance.

la méditation éthérée
My new CD "la méditation éthérée- 1" [a meditation in 7 movements] is finally online for "digital download only". this music is ONE work in 7 movements; it is not meant to be 7 tracks. it should be listened to in the order it is presented, and was meant to be. it was and is musical therapy for me.
i have decided to shrink my carbon [and petroleum] footprint by making my improvisational, experimental, electronic, ambient music, musique concrete, etc. available via download only.
i have decided to shrink my carbon [and petroleum] footprint by making my improvisational, experimental, electronic, ambient music, musique concrete, etc. available via download only.
when i am creating improvisational recordings- solo piano, solo synth, OR multi tracked synth recordings- the performance is the composition; the finished work; composition and recording created at the same time. it was performed the one time, when i improvised and recorded it; it will never be performed again. [not by me, anyway]
when doing solo piano improv, i only take the track into Sound Forge & normalize it. i might add some minimal reverb if i feel it needs it. i never edit it. when doing multi track improvisations i do go back and check levels, add effects, mix, etc. etc. but the 1st track is usually the main theme track, which i don't edit; and all other tracks/overdubs are improvised over or around the original one. sometimes i don't remember what i played on the first track, but that doesn't matter. i like some discord atonal weirdness and then resolve; but, if it's glaringly OUT, i MIGHT do a retake; but not always. interesting is more important than antiseptic
this music was created using my samsung android galaxy s phone with synth apps, recorded in Sound Forge 9.0 on my laptop, then flown into Acid 7.0 and various loops/sounds from my loop/sample libraries added, as well as reverbs, fx and delays etc. Then, mixed & rendered in Acid, then taken back to Sound Forge, for normalization, and any extra fx needed. voila! c'est la!
each session i have done in the last years is totally different, and this was actually the last work i have created. i was working on it, while also doing some tracks using Bram Brothers/Taureg and Rebirth/Propellerhead. i finished this first so, it went out first.
the gazillion other tracks [acoustic piano tracks, electric piano tracks, solo synth tracks, multi tracked synth tracks] need more thought, mixing, listening to, and work before i let them go. i enjoy this "cd"[cyber /cosmically distributed] because it was so relaxing to do; it was musical healing; music therapy. it was and is very calming. i especially like to listen to it when i am driving, or writing in my journal in the morning, or as background when i am doing various projects in the house. no words, no drums, no problem

doug's notes:
at the time this cd was recorded, i was mostly known for playing solo on bourbon street; so, it was a shock for some people to hear me doing this music: hard bluesy techno-ish rock with a nasty edge... but, i'd always done rock and funk before i went solo.
in the mid to late 70s i was in 'razin' cain' - a very high-energy new orleans funky rock band doing all original music [i wrote the majority of the material]- AND in the late 80s i had 'doug duffey/street level/new orleans' a techno-voodoo-euro-gumbo-funk-rock-dance tribe [doing my original music] -so... for me, the music on this cd was NOT out of character. au contraire.

doug's notes:
this cd was made up of material taken from 3 different solo recording sessions I did. It was released in Europe but is unfortunately out of print. but you can try the above contact info.
I did the 1st solo sessions in the late 80s at jy studio in west Monroe, Louisiana. I went in with no rehearsal, no plan, and no idea what I would do… I just sat at the piano and played & sang some of my original songs [and a few traditional songs] for an hour or two. We stopped after each song, then went on to the next one. everything was done in one take; there were no over-dubs; there was no mixing; it was recorded ‘live’ in the studio. For that reason, I called the material from that session “honest mistakes”. Of all the sessions I’ve ever done, it was the most magical. "love comes”, “the breath of scandal”, “in here” and many of my favorites were done in that session.
promo foto for "honest mistakes" -by vivien thomas / new orleans
The 2nd session was done at ultrasonic studios in new orleans in the early 90s. I recorded “new orleans rain” “living the blues”, and 2 of my personal favorites: “just remember the good times” and “where there is love”.
it was not an easy or comfortable session, but i got through it! i'd been robbed the night before [ah, new orleans!] and was totally freaked out! the piano was hard as hell to play. i had a board put down on the floor and mic-ed, ala john lee hooker, for percussion; but all my rings and jewelry also added to the percussion section!
doug duffey at ultrasonic- by bob crosby/ new orleans
The 3rd session was recorded in Monroe at my friend, john cale’s, house. He had a great Steinway grand, good mics, and a big old teac machine. I recorded in the living room, with my new orleans votive candles and incense burning on the piano, and friend/neighbor wayne kept bringing us 'cape cods' from across the street! It was a totally relaxed, informal, comfortable and fun ‘down home’ session. just the way i like to record. ‘hoodoo you love” “the 1st taste of trouble” and “fallen angels” were some of the songs I recorded.
I am planning to recycle most of my solo material and issue new compilations via CD.BABY in early 2008. check the cd page for info.[c]2011 DOUG DUFFEY

Doug’s notes:
This cd was compiled from various gigs and radio shows recorded in Holland and Switzerland. we did an amazing live radio broadcast called ‘leideskade live” in a big studio in Hilversum, Holland. There was a very enthusiastic studio audience, which can be heard on the recordings. We shared the bill with chris duarte and the boo radleys [who didn’t show up…so we had to play longer…which was great for us!] we also did swiss radio/tv international at the BEA in Bern with another great live audience. ‘back home in louisiana’ came from that session.
The majority of the material was recorded at mahogany hall in Bern and the Gaskessel in Biel. Both concerts were great! We had very big and responsive crowds...and a LOT of encores! after the show, my friend olivier viret [who shot photos at the Gaskessel show- and shot the cover foto for this cd and 'living the blues'] said i was "like a white james brown!" - unfortunately the complete 20 minute version of 'rectified spirit' is not on this cd. There was a lot of music to choose from… and a lot more that hasn’t even been edited YET!
this cd is out of print and I’m not going to press it again; but some material from it, and other live shows, will be available in the near future from one of the cyber labels. check the news page for info.[c]2011 DOUG DUFFEY

doug's notes:
although this cd is listed w/a lot of cyber labels as 'blues' it is MUCH more than that! it's a big gumbo of louisiana funk, soul, r&b, blues, and gospel flavors.
a lot of the songs were written in, and about, new orleans when i was living there. 'hoodoo you love', 'new orleans rain', 'you bring me joy', and 'love and hate' are lyrically based on what i visually saw, went through, and/or lived. as usual, with my work, it is almost always derived from true life experience. even 'down in mississippi' [written in brussels] and 'victim of the blues' were written about times at my cousin's plantation in natchez, mississippi... or driving to or from there.
the cd was recorded it over several months time at "the boiler room" in new orleans- where we had some incredibly funky sessions and equally good times... [and some great shrimp & oyster po-boys from the 'louisiana seafood exchange'! which definitely effected the groove on 'recitified'!]
june yamagishi, cornell williams, maarten zwaarts, and i normally rehearsed the songs then recorded the basic tracks- but on 'somethin' funky' and 'down in mississippi' anders osborne [who co-produced and played on my 1st cd 'danger, sex and sound fx'] joined us... and those two songs were totally 'jammed' live. they have great energy!
cornell's mom, eloudie bingmon, played B-3 on 'if it ain't one thing' [later covered by marcia ball] because i wanted a real church organist! the vision of her with shoes off, and a kool cigarette in her mouth as she played, will always stay with me when i hear it!...but all the stories from the sessions are too many to mention.
some of new orleans finest musicians [and some of my old friends] are on this cd. their contributions are immeasurable. i really think the music speaks for itself... and i personally feel this is a timeless recording.
it was mixed at ardent studios in memphis; so i've got some of both of my favorite musical worlds on this cd. it's most definitely a funk and soul extravaganza!
update december 2006:
in listening to this cd now... it almost seems more timely than when it was recorded!
