THE SOLO SESSIONS 1988-1992 [notes]

Doug Duffey- vocal/acoustic grand piano
All songs written, arranged, performed and produced by Doug Duffey [except: House of the Rising Sun*- Traditional- adapted & arranged by Doug Duffey]. All songs published by Doug Duffey Music, BMI. Recorded at Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans; JY Recording Studio, West Monroe, LA;  The John Cale Studio, Monroe, LA
Doug's notes:
doug-duffey-st.louis-cathed.gif (264209 bytes)LOUISIANA: most of the material on this cd relates to louisiana, new orleans, and/or the south, or has a southern, bluesy, rootsy, americana feel about it. there are a lot of southern images floating around in the lyrics.

CABARET VIEUX CARRE: these are some of my darker, more dramatic, somewhat cabaret/theatrical ballad type songs. combined they have the feel of a late night bistro; rather like the late shift where i worked on bourbon street. the only UP tempo song is 'leave the man alone' ...which i wrote about elvis.

although i had played piano since i was 12, i mostly worked in groups, playing keys, in the 1960s until the late 1980s. i'd always written songs on the piano, or keyboard, and did a lot of home recordings- but never went in real studio and recorded solo. i began playing some solo gigs around 1987... and did my 1st solo recordings in 1988.
there is something special about a real acoustic grand piano;  playing it, and singing at the same time, you become one with it. you get totally in sync, in a rhythm... and that's the way it should be. you can lose yourself. i cannot imagine recording solo any other way.
i went in JY Studios in 1988, sat at the piano and played and sang one song after the other, off the top of my head. nothing was planned; nothing was rehearsed; i had no repertoire. there was absolutely no stress... i just did it. it was a very magical session. everything just seemed to flow... the songs rolled out.  if there was a tiny mistake, i didn't really bother about it ... unless it was VERY noticeable, in which case we would stop the tape, and start again. i dont really get hung up on technicalities... as long as the overall feel is there. for that reason i named the collection of those recordings "honest mistakes" [released on cassette]
several years later, when i was living in new orleans, i'd written some new songs and wanted to do more recordings. i went to ultrasonic. it was a nightmare from hell :due to some personal issues, and the fact that the piano keys were stiff; hard as hell to play. everything seemed to go wrong. it did not go well at all; but i got several usable cuts, after much torture. i did a good version of 'trouble in mind'- but due to copyright/legal hassles i am not including it on this collection.
when i was home for a visit, my friend john cale offered me the use of his steinway grand. we recorded in his living room with a big 2 track tascam. i had all my religious votive candles and incense burning... and a friend [wayne hopper] across the street brought cocktails... it went great.  again... no stress. everything i did that day just 'worked'. mais, c'est la vie! sometimes it goes, sometimes it doesn't. 2 out of 3 ain't bad!
later, when i was working solo on bourbon street, i had some of the songs from these sessions put on  cassettes and sold them on the gig. in the  mid 90s some of the songs were released on cd on a european label, but is now out of print. [long story] i gave the company 2 dats with 30+ songs on them and told them to choose- something i shouldn't have done. for that reason i have decided to make 2 cds from the 3 sessions... and sort them as i feel they flow better.
so now... almost 20 years since the original recordings,  i've  released these songs to the world... through the miracle of new technology and cdbaby!
the fotos on this page are from the era of the recordings [1988-1992]... most were shot in new orleans. the big one at top is one of my favorites.  it was taken in a k-mart foto-booth in little rock when i was doing a 2-week solo 'run' there.

TRADITIONAL- a year late and many dollars short

a year late and many dollars short; as opposed to a day late and a dollar short. a lot of water has gone under [and up to] the bridge. it seems i never get cds completed until a year or so after the recordings. i dont even think about them. i let them age like fine wine, or ferment like liquor, or turn to vinegar, i suppose. i am always more interested in DOING the projects/recordings than the final result. once it's done, i'm ready to get onto something else.

it seems unreal that it has been a year since we began the TRADITIONAL recordings. so much has happened, that it is to the point of surreal. so much loss; so much pain. my friend wayne recently said that he felt the cd was 'portentous' when we were doing it; possibly because there are so many sad songs about death and dying, lost love and life... et je ne sais pas. a lot of old traditional gospel, folk, blues & jazz songs, which, no, are not very happy. but then, life is not always happy.

michael emailed & said he now had time to get back to the cd- so- i asked him to listen and choose the best of the best takes. i trust his ears and judgement implicitly. i trust my judgement on the performances, but not the fine tuning of the sonics of it all; the mastering etc. i sent a friend a cd i'd done, he put it in and it blew up his speakers- so, no.... probably not wise; but i have LEARNED from time and experience to watch & obey those damned meters.

i will possibly have 100 physical cds made to start with, and have them and digital downloads available via cdbaby on all the usual internet music outlets [amazon, itune, rhapsody etc] - so stay tuned for release date. might have to do a cd release party concert @ the rayville arts center where the grand piano tracks were recorded. but you'd have to brown bag it

TRADITIONAL - new solo cd 2010- 3rd Notes

kind of in a creative postpartum depression after giving birth to the new cd... or rather coming down- after the creative high [and the high of hyperventilating from singing a gazillion times daily] and going from creative mode back to daily life; suddenly stopping after days of intense creative work

BUT have begun 'flying in' some guitar parts to the mix on "Silver Dagger"; "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child" and waiting for the parts for "Delia" [which is running about 7:45 minutes long] adding some Bill Frissell/Pops Staples type stuff to it.

TRADITIONAL - new solo cd 2010- 2ND notes

MORE FUN WITH DOUG AND MICHAEL:

We finished all recordings tonight- working today from 1Pm- 9Pm non stop. This cd project has turned out to be such a collaboration, that Michael and i have just about split the duties! it's been a lot of fun... AND a lot of hard work!

We still have to 'fly in' some 'slide' and 'pops staples' type guitar tracks from George Bryan; which he played/recorded in Omaha and emailed to me today- and then Michael will begin mixing and fixing and mastering, once back in Virginia.

I knew that Michael was an excellent keyboard player and singer BUT did not know he was a former percussionist! [the man never ceases to amaze me] In addition to playing the piano track on STACKOLEE he played all the percussion [cardboard boxes, congas, tambourine]- we decided not to put any bass on it. We both did piano tracks for the song, but i decided to use his track, as it has a very James Booker feel. It sounds very old school New Orleans. i did the lead vocal and backing vocals.
we also changed boxes & used my flip flop as a beater [instead of the spatula] which made for a fatter sounding 'bass drum' - some of this stuff definitely has a 'parade feel to it

Michael added some kick ass B3 pedal bass lines- organ- and all the percussion- to WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN- on which i played piano, did lead vocal and several backing vocal tracks/as did Michael- sounds like the Blackwood Brothers [or as I dubbed it "the Backwoods Brothers"]- our Southern Baptist roots are showing

DELIA- which i had done piano tracks/vocals on in Rayville as a potential solo track took on a whole new trip- i did an alternate take with a click track to guide the eventual guitar-then take it out- but Michael added organ and we finally decided to pull out most of the piano- and slowly ease it back in- we took the 'guide track' drums out- and M added a lot of Celtic sounding percussion- i did a huge but distant sounding choir- and we will eventually add george's guitar parts- this will definitely be a production number- well, it already IS. BUT there are several: SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE A MOTHERLESS CHILD; AMAZING GRACE- and the 2 above mentioned songs

but also there are quite a few totally solo songs: st. james infirmary; st. louis blues; careless love; black is the color of my true love's hair; scarborough fair; she moved through the fair; [and] silver dagger [although we will be adding guitar to it] - [and] hard times come again no more [Michael on piano me on vocal] - We got a LOT done in 4 long sessions. traditional blues,
folk, and gospel songs done in possibly unconventional ways- but in ways that felt totally "right" to us. we shared the duties in the box/percussion and hammond bass pedal departments

it has been an absolute joy AGAIN, as it always is, to work with Michael- his talent and creativity are inspirational- his insight and input is always "spot on"- he's not afraid to try my crazy approaches to recording- and he always hears the material w/a different ear- which often makes for interesting turns of events- taking it to a totally different place than from where it was originally planned. PLUS, he's a total work horse like i am... work work work... go go go... we're like camels that cross deserts without water... more updates to come.

TRADITIONAL - new solo cd 2010- 1st notes

Began work on the new TRADITIONAL cd on June 21, 2010 with Michael Rasbury engineering and co-producing. This is a project i have been wanting to do for some time; recording traditional folk, blues and gospel songs; songs i have known or performed most of my life.

i wanted this project to be done
as organically as possible- recorded here in my birthplace/home/ the source of my musical roots- using acoustic/traditional instruments- and keeping the music as pure, real and honest as possible... albeit not completely done in traditional styles/arrangements

foto [c]2010 Michael Rasbury

We began recording Hammond B3 & vocals on June 21[West Monroe, Louisiana] - we used hand claps, conga, tambourine & cardboard boxes for percussion. i played the bass lines, using the B3 foot pedals, with my hands to get some bass grooves! I sang the lead vocal- then went back and did the backing vocals several times to make a 'choir'. Both Michael and i did B3 tracks on "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child" and both added piano on "Amazing Grace"

We recorded solo piano & vocal tracks [recorded 'live'] at the Rayville Arts Center* [Rayville, Louisiana] on June 24 & 26. Many thanks to Wayne Hopper [director*] for all his help and support.
On "Hard Times Come Again No More" [by Stephen Foster- circa 1855] Michael played piano [some amazing piano at that!] and i sang; we both did separate piano takes for "Stackolee"

foto [c]2010 Michael Rasbury

We'll be doing more recordings in the next few days- i have a few more songs i want to add- plus we'll be working on the tracks we already have. My life long dear friend George Bryan [Nebraska Hall of Fame] will be adding some acoustic/electric and slide guitar tracks on some of the tracks

We hope to get the majority of everything in place before Michael leaves for NYC and i leave for Europe. Hopefully everything will be mixed & mastered and the cd will be finished/released by the end of the summer. It's been a great experience- thank you Michael
for all your hard work/amazing talent- and thank you Wayne for everything!

UPDATE ON SONGS

monroe louisiana 5.20.2009
i actually wrote/recorded about 60 songs during the 4-5 days of recordings in switzerland. rather than saying "wrote" i should say "created", as i did not write anything; i merely sat down at the piano and let my hands and the music go where they wanted to. All is solo piano improvisation, which i will edit and release as only solo piano; BUT if some pieces feel like they need vocals & lyrics, i'll add them; AND some i will only use for backgrounds for my art videos.

now, i'm back in Louisiana- enjoying what feels like fall weather at the moment; it's almost cold; but i know that will change soon. so, i'm getting some outside/yard work done before the heat hits; then i'll hole up in my house and work on various music, art & photography projects [in the air conditioning] ALL summer long.

40 new songs written/recorded [switzerland]

i recorded/wrote 23 songs today & did 17+ yesterday- so: 40 new tracks to date- AND i plan to do more before i leave for the states. i put them on cd & listened tonight & feel certain most of them are keepers. there are some that need editing, but i always feel like that's cheating. so... whatever doesn't go on new solo cds will be edited & used for my art videos- or i might add fx, synths & B3 to them & do other weirdness and release them later. this new stuff is rather like debussy/satie meet alice coltrane in a goth blues bar. some dark, some light, some heavy, some ethereal, some lullabye like... etc... it's totally free form improvised solo piano- no vocals- and something i have wanted to do for some time now. i get tired of words/lyrics; of hearing them AND of writing them... sometimes more can be said without words.

so, i decided to have my old upright tuned [a Burger & Jacoby piano made in Biel in the 1880s] and use my Tascam Dr 1 portable digital recorder. i just stick it behind the piano, press record, then sit down and play whatever comes into my head, or not into my head but off the top of it. total auto pilot: so there are some interesting changes and chords and little journeys and side trips going on in the songs between the beginnings and [sometimes unexpected] endings.

i plan on doing more and more of this while i am here...as long as the piano holds tuning [which is already kind of going out... but makes for interesting vibrations- but on the bluesy stuff sounds VERY authentic] ... this reminds me of when i was a teenager and would sit and play for hours on end...improvising... totally lost in the music.

because i get tired of doing the same thing over and over- and hate getting into a musical or any other kind of rut- i am forever changing styles and mediums [which is why i do art and photography as well as music]... so this is my latest adventure- and one i have thoroughly enjoyed

welcome 2009

Zurich airport -4.4.2009

I'm beginning to update my website... so bear with me. between the website, myspace, facebook, youtube and my blogs i get more than a little over media-cated. i've tended to neglect my website for the more easily edited 'social networking' sites. i want to pare down my site and make it more concise... easily navigated etc. and add more photos etc to it.

i am in europe for a few more weeks - i came over december 8- went home march 5- came back march 31 and went into rehearsals then flew to denmark to do the djurs bluesland festival on april 4th- and flew back the next day- so i'm still a little bit jet-lagged. now i am editing the live video jacqueline shot at the festival... posting them on youtube, myspace and facebook...

the group has had a great year so far- and we're expecting more good things with the release of the new cd. it is still being mixed and mastered, but hopefully will be finished within the next 2 months.

i also plan to do some solo piano/vocal writing/recordings [and edit/finish some i've begun] as well as various multi-track recordings begun and shelved for too many years. so summer 2009 will be spent working on various music projects that NEED to be finished.

i'll be adding to my blogs here in the next months... stay tuned!

recording notes- louisiana march 2009

Above is a shot from my Enoch's solo gig last Saturday [3.14.09] i recorded the whole show w/my new Tascam Dr1- which is such a great tool- i can record live shows/rehearsals etc; plug it via USB & stereo cable to my laptop and use it's built in mics as a vocal mic over my Acid [multi-tracks] songs; it even has lines in [2 mini jacks/1 normal jack]. it w/the 8GB memory card, my laptop, and a 1 TB external HD, has brought my portable studio to a whole new level. i might start producing other artists on site- have gear will travel!

i used the DR1 the next morning [Sunday] to record about 11 new Hammond B3 tracks in the house- in Acid- which gives me the opportunity/freedom to chop/cut and paste/rearrange parts into song structure, which i can then sing over, and/or add solos to etc. my original thought was to do a jimmy smith type cd- but then some Traffic/Brian Auger influences creeped in- so who knows what the final result will be; jimmy smith meets traffic/auger in new orleans/the delta on acid? i edited them into song form all sunday night till 7AM, which was cool but exhausting. finishing them should keep me busy for a while. i might do more tracks before heading back to europe; and want to do a trio [B3, bass & drums] this summer... totally live using the DR1- or maybe even direct to dat using 2 room mics. i love old school recording techniques as much as all this new digital.

when trying to move and clean up files on my laptop/hard-drives i discovered tons of solo piano tracks i had recorded last year [and the year before] and forgotten about- with the intention of eventually writing lyrics to/recording vocals over them- [which i transferred to where i could find them!]- some would be great as is- just solo piano- and some definitely lend themselves to having vocals over them. i did a version of the traditional "careless love" [with a few original lyrics thrown in] which fits with the songs i recorded [as rehearsal] for the Celtic Fest:
  1. black is the color of my true loves hair
  2. scarboroguh fair
  3. she moved through the fair
  4. the bold fenian men
  5. dirty old town
and some older tunes i recorded in studios [which i didnt put on my two solo cds]
  1. crazy bout the way i walk
  2. st. james infirmary
  3. swing low, sweet chariot
so with "careless love" and one or two more tradtional recordings there WILL be enough for a new solo vocal/piano cd of folk/traditional songs - and a solo piano cd, and this B3 cd and so many tracks [mixed trans-grenres: blues with hip hop; delta blues with world type stuff; techno stuff mixed with R&B etc.] -including the projects i began with steve kilpatrick; the DDT project [me, tommy miller, dough johnson] and a project i began with kelvin bullen in zermatt a few years back- [all Acid tracks ready for lyrics/vocals]-this could make for a very busy, productive, and interesting summer!
